      Regarding how much you should set aside, it honestly depends on the destination, the prices there and a few other factors. But as an estimate I’d say about 10-15% of your total travel budget as you never know what kind of emergency you could have god forbid. 

      If nothing bad happens, you can always splurge on something you enjoy towards the end of your trip. 🙂

      -Pack some of your kids and some of your own favorite snacks with you.

      -Try to stay in a guesthouse or hotel with a kitchen so you can prepare your own meals and yeah it’s better to do groceries locally. However, try to stay away from the city centre while grocery shopping, you’d be surprised how much you can save by just buying from store that are a few Km’s away. (In some cases you can also save money buy house sitting through websites like trustedhousesitters.com)

      -Of course as you mentioned you can look for deals on family meals online or through apps.

      -Another recommendation would be, try to eat some of the local street food however always from places that are crowded as those are more likely to be stomach friendly and delicious. You can honestly find the most delicious food sometimes trying out the local street food.
